Introduced in 2001, the .NAME domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level names remained functional.
